Disney Couldn't Even Do The HET Ship I Liked With Frozen

For the January talk meme (that I am only just now starting on, at the end of January) errant_shadows asked me to talk about: Frozen 2 (whenever the hell that's supposed to be coming out) specifically, Elsa as a lesbian (come on Disney, you can go there) and possible story-lines - discuss.

Okay, normally, I can play along with these types of questions, but for this one, my mind went, "Disney would never in a million years do this," and I couldn't get past it. Disney is not going to have a queer character in ANY of their major franchise UNLESS the superhero folk manage to slip it past the radar. One of their princesses is not going to be queer UNTIL homosexuality/ sexualities-that-are-not-hetero are SO COMMON in the culture that the only comment pop culture would make about it would be 'finally, Disney gets with the times.'

Yeah, I agree with this. Like, I kept seeing people freaking out on Tumblr over Poe in Star Wars, especially when the Episode VIII rewrites started happening, and it was fun, then the more I thought about it, I was just like, it's DISNEY. They're not going there. Ambiguous is one thing. Canon LGBT is completely another. I wish the world wasn't still like that? But it is, so.

And I definitely think the princesses will be the last bit of Disney to go there. THE LAST.
Yep. I kind of keep my mouth shut about Poe, because Finn/Poe isn't my ship, and there is no need for me to hash anyone's squee (and since I ship Finn/Rey, I DO have skin in the game), but... subtext aside (which is there, I'll grant you) THERE IS NO WAY IT'S EVER GOING TO BE CANON. Look three SW trilogies ahead, MAYBE then you'll have a chance.

Preach.
I'm all about the Star Wars OT3, tbh, and that's clearly never gonna happen, so. *g* But I enjoy both Finn/Rey and Finn/Poe (and Poe/Rey, actually, but that's essentially an extrapolation based on their characters that has to happen in my head), so even if there was a question of which (if any) would happen, I wouldn't be upset either way. And, happily, canon's never made me stop shipping what I want to ship anyway! (Well, okay, 'surprise! we're related!' has, lol.) I guess I mostly just wish we lived in a world where it wasn't a big deal, and there could be a huge money-making franchise with a gay space fighter pilot who's handsome and dashing and heroic and also just happens to like to kiss boys (or, hey, boys AND girls), and no one cares about it.
Everything in this post.

Disney's whole thing is family friendly mass appeal. Plus--and you might even have been the person to tell me this--a TON of money is made in international markets (and that's NOT to make 'other countries' the problem, because there's clearly a giant queerphobic element in the US also), and they wouldn't risk it in the global market either.

I wonder if it might happen sooner at Dreamworks.
I actually almost wrote a line in this post that was like 'and it's not going to happen until Dreamworks has, like six successfully cartoons with queer characters'. Which is to say YES. Disney is not going to have queer characters IN A PRINCESS FRANCHISE NO LESS until they've got proof they can make bank while doing so.

I'm positive YOU were the one who told ME this, actually, but it's super valid. Disney has a very particular brand, and their princess line is a core part of that, and I just don't think they're going to do anything "progressive" with it until they absolutely have to.
Out of curiosity, what was the het ship you liked? I can only think of Elsa/Hans or Elsa/Kristoff as alternatives?
Elsa/Kristoff. Ice is his business, she MAKES ICE. Plus, I really wanted Anna to just go 'I want that guy!' and not be TALKED into choosing 'guy who is not a prince' because 'woman just can't choose anyone decent on their own with their tiny little brains!'
iiinteresting. I never considered them personally because she puts him out of business essentially and that's sorta hard to recover from, imo? but I respect your choice ofc. I just don't see Elsa with either of the characters in the movie - I like reading crossover ships, that's where it's at for me!
What's your fav Elsa crossover ship?
I don't have an OTP, I just love Elsa and reading about her developing relationships with other people. I'm not married to the headcanon of her being a lesbian, but I do enjoy reading femslash. There was an Elsa/Mulan fic I read a while back that I rather enjoyed and also an Elsa/Cinderella fic. ^_^

But there's so much Elsanna out there, it's hard to find anything else!
I was just thinking about this when I heard about the popularity of Finn/Poe from Star Wars.

Although Disney is a pretty prominent figure in pop culture, I agree that it's not going to stick it's neck out to be progressive. They only just created their first black Disney princess (who was a freaking frog for most of the movie might I add and is often ignored in the Disney princess line) and I don't think Moana would have happened had not the fandom been vocal about their desire to see more princesses of colour.
