So, when I was wracked with insomnia last night, I caught up on tv.

Bones:

So, is the Jack/Angela ship officially sunk? Never to sail again? Sad to think that Angela used to be my fav character. *sigh* I really didn't enjoy her and Wendel screwing, and I'm not even totally sure why.

But I love love love Stephan Fry coming back! God, words just cannot express how awesome he is. I actually liked the arc with Booth not shooting straight and Gordon Gordon's pep talk. "You have to save the <strike>princess</strike> <strike>cheerleader</strike> Bones!" Yes, if anything could get Booth's mojo back, it would be Brennan watching. Although I was half-expecting the solution to be Bones throwing him one. *dirty laugh*

Also, while I am SURE the writers themselves have forgotten this, the last time Gordon Gordon was on screen, he mentioned that one of the B/B team knew that they were in love - since they're acting like Booth just feel in love with Brennan recently, that would mean that Brennan was aware of her feelings. Which, personally, is an idea I love.

The Vampire Diaries:

WHY DO YOU KEEP KILLING OFF FUCKING AWESOME FEMALE CHARACTERS, SHOW?!?!?!?!!?!

Lexie was bad ass. I adored her platonic BFF status with Stefan.

Also, the whole Damon-Katherine-possessed!Bonnie thing was fabulous. Because Damon totally loved Katherine, and they really, really should have been Spike and Dru-ing it all across the planet. And Damon kept his side of the deal. (Which makes me want to write about him saving wee!Bonnie.)

Bonnie's ancestor was totally badass, I loved the pentagram being used as a symbol of protection, and I really, really want to see Bonnie leveling up to crazy magic without being ridden by a ghost.

I wasn't so thrilled with everyone being all weepy at the end of the ep.

I'm glad Katherine isn't going to show up, but I'm kinda of disappointed that the other 27 vamps weren't let loose. Although it's not like this town doesn't have PLENTY of fangs running around.

Okay, so, after Star Trek reboot, the Vulcan population is decimated.

Would that make Spock's genes more valuable (we needs all the genetic diversity we can get to keep the species going) or less (half Vulcan ≠ Vulcan)?

Discuss.

I'm inclined to think it's the latter, but the movie sort-of contradicts me on that, with Spock planning on quitting Star Fleet to help rebuild Vulcan.

That said, if they ever wanted Spock's genes, with their level of tech, I doubt it would put a crimp in him being on the Enterprise. It might throw some wrenches in the wheels with regards to Uhura.

Her hands, however, were caked with green powder.

She was laughing crazily as she pounded up the stairs of their hotel after him, her combat boots loud on the wood.

Rock, adrenaline surging in his veins and his nostrils free of the coppery reek of blood, was laughing right along with her.

They burst into their room and suddenly Revy's mouth was on his.

For a minute, he stood shocked, and then he fumbled behind himself, locking the door.

Revy's mouth was merciless, plundering his throughly, her body soft against his, even as her hands gripped his powder-streaked shirtfront hard enough to have the cloth creaking in protest.

His powder-streaked shirt front. Which was part of his powered-streaked shirt. Which was on his sweaty, dusty body.

Rock jerked back. "I need a shower," he said.

Revy blinked at him with an angry, bewildered expression on her face. Then she scowled, just looking pissed.

"Whatever, Rock," she snarled, shoved him away from the door.

"Revy, wait," he said, gingerly touching her hip.

She whirled to face him, the Walter PPK she concealed in a thigh holster before they left the hotel this morning in her hand. She pressed it into his chest, hard.

"What?" she snarled, baring her teeth.

"I wasn't saying no," Rock explained. He took a deep breath, the pressure of the barrel at his chest decreasing. "I just-" he gestured at his shirt. "I meant - maybe... you could wash my back?"

Sakura is not amused.

On the Mother's Day of Sakura's seventeenth year, Sakura realized that her mother would have preferred to have a son.

Specifically, Haruno Saki would have preferred to have birthed Sai.

"I still can't believe that you're Sakura's mother - you look so young," Sai said with patent insincerity.

Saki blushed, pushed a bit of raspberry colored hair behind her ear, and gave him another one of the peach cookies with white icing that Sakura had stayed up until 3:00 am after a double shift to make.

"You're such a sweet boy," she said, discreetly slapping Sakura's hand away when she reached for a cookie for herself.

Sai's smile fractured for a minute at this. He gave Sakura a look out of the corner of his eye.

"Aren't you going to react violently Ha-Haruno?" he asked.

Saki frowned. "Oh, Sakura. Are you still stomping around and slamming doors and complaining about that nice Yamanaka girl. You should really try to be nicer to her." She sighed. "I thought you outgrew those temper tantrums you used to have."

Sakura smiled tightly. "Of course," she said through her teeth at the same moment Sai said, "Not noticably."

Sakura glared.

"I mean, 'yes, she has,'" Sai quickly correctly.

Which was surprising. Usually Sai just let his insults lie until she blooded his mouth up a bit.

Saki gave Sakura an I-expected-better-of-you look that reminded Sakura why she'd moved out as soon as she'd made chuunin and could afford an apartment.

"Let me make you some tea, Sai," she said, switching focus. "Do you like jasmine?"

"I do," said Sai, smiling so hard his eyes were crescents.

"Actually, I hate-" Sakura said to her mother's back, watching her patterned yukata as her mother bussled into the kitchen.

She bit her lip, waited until she could hear the clink of the kettle being set on the stove and then grabbed Sai's lapel and yanked him close.

"What the fuck is going on?"

Sai looked confused for a split second and then raised his voice.

"It's Mother's Day, Sakura, I thought you knew," he said, in a voice that undoutable carried to the very fartherest corners of her family's house. "Since I have no mother of my own, I thought it only right to express my gratitude to the beatiful women who raised you, my lovely teammate."

Haruno Sakura realized that there were exactly three possibilities for what was going on:

1.) Sai had suffered a mental breakdown.

2.) Sai had been infected with kijuuki flu, which caused fever, hallucinations, and psychotic symptoms.

3.) Sai had discovered a new way of making her life frustrating and miserable and had decided to exploit his invention to the fullest.

Sakura decided that the appropriate course of action for all of the above was punching her 'lovely teammate' through three walls.

She cocked back her fist right as her mother returned with the tea-tray, tears glinting in the corners of her eyes.

"You're such a sweet boy," Saki murmered.

"You're too kinda, Haruno-san," Sai responded in the exact same saccarhine tone.

"You must stay for dinner," she continued as Sakura's eyes widened in horror, "a poor motherless child like yourself, alone on the day devoted to maternity? It just wouldn't do."

"Unfortunately," Sakura cut in desperately.

"I would love to," Sai said, smiling so widely she expected his head to split in half.

~~~
Sai spent fifteen minutes of reassuring Saki that he would walk Sakura right to her door, right to her very doorstep, and protect Sakura from any and everything including rogue nins, tsunamis, and hangnails, before Saki let the door closed.
By this point, Sakura had bitten her cheek bloody and did not even try to mention that she was a fucking Konoha jounin, in Konoha, and that she had proven she could protect herself back when she, you know, helped kill Sasori of the Red Sands or, you know, kidnapped Kisame so Ino could pick his big, fat, fishy head apart.
But no.
According to her mother, she was still the stupid little gennin who needed to be reminded to leave the house on time.
And Sai, the bastard, just lapped it all up.
At the end of the block, Sai turned to her and said, "I think that went well."
Sakura flicked him with her finger without breaking stride.
The lamp-post across the street snapped when Sai's body hit it.
Two blocks later Sai caught up with her, limping and coughing blood.
Sakura turned to him and started yelling. "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?" she started off, continuing with, "HOW DARE YOU TRY MAKE MY MOTHER LIKE YOU BETTER THAN ME!"
Sai looked at his, blood smeared across his pale lips, dark eyes luminious in the dust.
"It's Mother's Day," he said slowly, "I thought it would be an aspicious day to... I thought... I was trying to make a good impression on your family."
Sakura snorted. "Trust me, you did," she said reaching out and stroking Sai's ribs with hands gloved in chakra. "Over dessert I thought my dad was going to offer you my dowery."
Sai sucked in a breath.
"Did that hurt?" she asked. At his negatory head shake, she continued setting and healing his ribs.
"You made a great impression, Sai," she said slowly. "You're doing so much better with social interactions. I just don't get why you thought you had to make a good impression on your teammate's family, you know?"
"Well, Sakura," Sai said in a by-route way that made her sure he was about to recite something.
"Well, I'm sure it made sense to you at the time," Sakura interupted, standing up straight and brushing her hands off. She so wasn't up for untangling Sai's latest snarl of social expectations and relationships. "I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
She waved at him as she trotted up the stairs to her apartment. When she peeked out her window after undressing for bed, she saw him still standing in the street, paging through a thick book under the streetlight and then looking up at her apartment and back again.
As Jack detoxes and more children disappear, he joins Pete's quest to find them, teaching her to use hexes and spells as well as her physical abilities in the fight against a rising dark power. "
To be honest, this book felt like a first book. There were several sentences where I wanted to move clauses about to make them flow better and because the narrator referred to her own dad by his given name so much, I kept being unsure if the man she keep referencing was her father.
The other thing is that Kittridge struggles against having her heroine be a damsel in distress and doesn't quite manage to escape that. Part of it is that Jack knows what's going on and Pete doesn't, which gives him an edge of power that she doesn't have, but there is one place that just made me wince: Pete is kidnapped by the villains, and when Jack shows up to rescue her, she yells at him for letting her get kidnapped and turning her into the damsel in distress.
Sorry, sweetie, it doesn't work like that. What really annoyed me is that it turns out Pete had been being used for bait in that instance and having her know that would, without changing much, would have totally changed the dynamic of the book.
Honestly, this is a book that I deeply wish had a fandom - the author creates so many different angles and character interactions (for instance, there is a throw-away line that indicated that Jack - who was dating Pete's sister- was involved sexually with her as well) that I think fandom would explore these better than the author would.
Not to mention that Kittridge fixed Jack's addiction (via magic) in the epilogue of the book. I was like 'no! despite the fact that what you're doing makes total sense, don't give up epic drama like that! String the agony out, bb!'
Also, while the cover is awesome:
I cannot get over Jack's biceps. Seriously, he is a skinny addict who has been living on the street. He didn't just get out of prison.
I feel like all my whinging gives the wrong impression of this book; while I can't exactly say why (well, actually, I think the characters just worked for me on an epic level) I blasted through this book in two days and when I found out that the sequel had yet to be released by reaction was 'oh noez!'
So clearly I want more. (Also, the narrator is switching from Pete to Jack, and I honestly think that it will improve the books.) Less curious about how Jack is going to escape from a devil's bargain, I'm curious about Pete's sister's reaction to Jack being alive, whether Pete left the police to work with Jack, if there will ever be a punk-rock reference in these books that I'll actually catch, etc.
Besides the characters, the author also does place very well; London feels appropriately old and half-foreign and rather ominous, I like the magic.
Also, the author does an excellent riff on how to say 'I love you' without saying 'I love you': things are looking grim for our heroes, and Pete tells Jack what her (terrible) given name is.
Awwww.
Oh, and I totally want to be in a situation where I have Jim Butcher trapped in an enclosed space and can get him to give me a cover quote.
LOTS Season One Finale and 2x01
Okay, so I got caught up and watched the first episode of the new season all in one gulp in the wee hours of this morning and I have thinky-thoughts:
About the end of season 1:
-Jensen works nicely with either one of her brothers. First you have Richard bringing her flowers and then you have Rahl manipulating her and telling her personal details and giving her a kitten. So, yeah, Jensen/Rahl? I totally ship it. I mean, the little kiss she gave him! Laying back on the couch to play with her pussy in that adorable white dress!
-I desperately wanted to sit Rahl down and read him the sociopath/cute girl relationship guidebook and the Evil Overlord's Guide (protip: don't kill her pets. That was beneath you.)
-I liked the alternate future. Kahlan was incredibly strong and badass and had nerves of ice and steel and looked deliciously excellent in red.
About 2x01:
-I am on the fence about whether LotS is a show that should have ended at season 1. On the one hand, Rahl was dead in the finale, problem solved. On the other, the writes have given our heroes some interesting problems, especially with Zed needing to find a new seeker.
-Richard needs to shave, desperately.
-I like Cara very much, although she and Denna still feel like the same character to me. Only Denna has canon Lesyay instead of subtextual Lesyay.
-Speaking of Cara, can you please be naked and wet and/or bloody and bruised in all your scenes? Thx.
-Charisma Charpenter was absolutely terrible in this episode. She was horribly phoning her performance in, and I say this as someone who liked Cordelia.
Dear Yuletide Santa,
Happy holidays! Thank you for volunteering to write a fic for me in one of the busiest times of the year.
Speaking personally, I'm one of those people who feel that smut is always welcome in a fic but I know that no everyone feels that way or is comfortable writing sex. Thus, I've provided both a gen and a het direction for almost every request. (And don't worry about me being disappointed if there isn't any sexyfuntimes - with all of the fandoms I requested, just that fact that fic is being written makes my day.)
If you're stumped or looking for more info on my tastes, I have a list of favorite tropes.
