Name the five unlikeliest (but successful) canon friendships.

1.) Sokka & Zuko. Never in a million years would I have seen that coming.

2.) Sarah & Casey. The slow, almost behind the scenes build of their friendship - from interdepartmental rivalry to having each other's backs - is one of my favorite things about Chuck.

3.) HIMYM. I think just the show itself deserves a mentions, for writing a show about three couples (or two couples, one dude, and a mystery woman) and having each character have a friendship with all the other characters. It is truly a show about a group of friends.

4.) Black Star and Soul. I did not expect them to be BFFs, or to get the attentions their BFF-ness did.

5.) Sumire and the English journalist. They start out disliking each other (they were just too alike) and end up friends who look out for each other.

2.) sainfoin_fields ' post here sums up how I often feel about discussions of race and IBARW.

3.) I have heard in the past the saying that eventually we're all going to be the same shade of brown. Years ago I would nod my head. Now, that idea has a subtle horror. One of the great things about seeing race (being aware of cultures different than your own, seeing faces that are dissimilar to your own in movies and books and plays) is that the world becomes a more interesting place. Different cultures are fascinating; different features are attractive; different life styles broaden my outlook as well as reaffirming my own choices and beliefs.

It would be horrifying to lose that.

avatar_contest  - for which I wrote "Healer's Hands," had four fics written for the prompt point and apparently not a single vote for any of them.

Now, I don't vote on these contests when I have a horse in the race because I feel that my choices are to be either egotistical or falsely modest and I wouldn't want to wonder if I won or lost by one vote (when that one vote was mine).

So what I'm asking you, flist, is if you have a moment and know Avatar, head over here and read some of the fics and vote for which one you think is the best. (comments at that entry are, of course, screened.)

First of all, I owe my flist an apology about this meme. I was pretty damn disorganized with it, so it was very hard to know what letters had been taken. I didn't want to write more than 24 ficlets, which means I turned down some people... but also didn't catch duplicates until I'd already written the ficbit, so some letters go two fics, sometimes I rewrote a prompt to better satisfy someone, etc. Basically, I was damn consistent with the whole thing. Some people got multiple prompts written, some didn't get any, which is, of course, unfair. So I wanted to let you know that if I ever do this again, I'll be more consistent and organized with it.

1.) Tramps Like Us. (Hands down my favorite manga ever.)

2.) Beauty & The Beast. (Favorite Disney movie.)

3.) Atropine, SD Wolfpup's Scrubs vid.

4.) Avatar. One of the many reasons that I need to do a series rewatch is because I've partially forgotten that when I was homesick and stressed and had a terrible roommate, the twenty or forty minutes I was able to watch Avatar a day (thanks, avatar_episodes !) was often the best part of my day, or if not, helped me recharge.

5.) How I Met Your Mother. This is one of the scant few comedy shows that I feel are legitimately funny (as well as touching) with some of the most complex and creative characters on television.

Remix sign ups are open but I haven't written fics in ANY of the qualifying fandoms and certainly not the required amount. I could have sworn that both Avatar and Naruto were on the list, but I guess not.

Goddamn.

No, I couldn't believe it either.

 Okay, so I haven't done the last two week's fannish5, because two weeks ago, my answers to the question (Five reasons you only get into one fandom at a time - or - five reasons you are multi-fannish") just didn't parse nicely into five answers, and this week's (Name five imaginary places you would like to go on vacation) frustrated me, because honestly, the places I'd like to go would require me to be printed with special skills to not die.

So, I'm making my own questions and posing it to you.

So, flist, tell me five of your bulletproof kinks in storytelling.

I talk about a lot of them here, but I'm going to give you five more, to start the ball rolling:

1.) Nakama.

2.) Gender-reversals. Everything I'm really digging right now has some nice gender reversals deep in the text.

3.) Complicated father-daughter relationships. (See, Jack and Sydney Bristow, Keith and Veronica Mars, Noah and Shiloh from Repo!) This ties into the idea of gender reversals. So many author just focus on the whole father/son dynamic.

4.) Glasses. Especially hot, dark hair guys with glasses.

5.) Romance with an equal. I like contrast between two people in a pairing, but I also want them to also be equals in some kind of root way. Zuko and Katara are actually a really good example of this. Despite their sociocultural and (initial) nationalistic differences, they're very similar in a lot of deep ways (importance of family, the ways they decide to protect their family, a total disrespect of other people's property....)

You know how Jun clearly ships Zutara? Well, Eda clearly ships Rock/Revy.
