I would adore it if my wonderfully gender savvy and articulate flist would poke their noses over here and add their two cents.

Would that make Spock's genes more valuable (we needs all the genetic diversity we can get to keep the species going) or less (half Vulcan ≠ Vulcan)?
Discuss.
I'm inclined to think it's the latter, but the movie sort-of contradicts me on that, with Spock planning on quitting Star Fleet to help rebuild Vulcan.
That said, if they ever wanted Spock's genes, with their level of tech, I doubt it would put a crimp in him being on the Enterprise. It might throw some wrenches in the wheels with regards to Uhura.

My instinctive thought was 'they wouldn't get it.' I think a lot of the casual, non fandom readers of Naruto would be REALLY confused and I would bet money on the American and Japanese parents flipping the fuck out.
However, what I'm pondering is whether or not having Naruto and Sasuke being gay for each other would change some children's perceptions about homosexuals. Would it make them more accepting? Would they start to see gay people as human beings who deserves the same rights everyone else does?
You thoughts, flist?
So I picked up Martha Wells' Wheel of the Infinite. Now, I bought this paperback from a used bookstore, so it had that really nice, really intense used-book smell. You know the one I mean, right?
Last friday, I went down to the local independent bookstore, which has an espresso book machine (aka, a machine that can print a book in about, oh, fifteen minutes. Watching it was so cool - it had this great hot ink smell too.
All of which makes me know that books are not going anywhere in the long term. I highly doubt that most people who be able to give up the sheer tactile pleasure of books.
Now, on to the books themselves....
Like Death of a Necromancer, Wheel of the Infinite suffers from not being The Fall of the Ile-Rien trilogy. ( more )
Now, on to The Shadow Queen, which I loved so, so, so, so so much. Not since Queen of the Darkness have a loved an Anne Bishop book this much.
( deliciously dark details )
For
rameena: Okay, which characterization choices bothered you? Because I got frustated with the second to last book (still haven't read Witch Witch, Black Curse) because it seemed like it was all about Rachel's sex life, and it was falling into the Anita Blake pit where everyone wants the heroine's ass. And then there was all this plotty stuff that was WAY more interesting than the boys in Rachel's life.
(FYI, flist - if you you also have thoughts about this, feel free to jump in.)
Joss Whedon is interviewed by Ira Glass.
This was FANTASTIC. Seriously, I know it's not always a popular opinion, but I really like Joss - both the shows he's made (most of them) and the interviews and political statements of the man himself. Furthermore, Glass asks really astute, interesting questions on leadership, the chosen girl and her watcher dynamic that repeats, the killing of the father-figure, etc. It's well worth a listen, and I was sorry when I saw I only had fifteen minutes left.
So last friday's
fannish5 is really fitting:
What 5 series would you resurrect if you could?
1.) Firefly. Especially hearing Joss' thoughts on Zoe/Wash, and knowing that Wash wouldn't have died, I am sorry once again that this show got canceled when it did.
2.) The Sarah Conner Chronicles. On principle alone I was sad that this show got canceled when Dollhouse got renewed, but having watched a bit more, I'm even more regretful about this.
3.) Life. The second season was a bit rocky, mainly due to the writer's strike and Sarah Shanti's real-life pregnancy, but I the show was an interesting mystery series and had fantastic character exploration and development. It deserved a third season.
4.) Global Frequency. It never even got an aired pilot, but what was filmed was fantastic - awesome premise, interesting character, good actors and fantastic gender dynamics.
5.) Wonderfalls. This had such an awesome and complete first season that I hesitate to put in on the list - nothing breaks my heart like a sophomore slump - but listening to the writers talk about what they had planned, I could see them managing to keep the quality of their show up.

Speaking of, 2x08 is probably one of my favorite episodes thus far, and interesting enough on of the ones I've seen at the gym.
